05 - Town Centre - Western Gateway

The Western Gateway is identified as an area for improvement in the Town Wide Strategy and Neighbourhood Plan and is identified as a priority area as it functions as a key link between proposed improvements to town centre and west of the town centre, Burgess Hill station together with links to the north from the emerging Brookleigh (Northern Arc) pedestrian and cycle improvements.

Works are underway through the Western Gateway and Burgess Hill station schemes, to deliver highway improvements through the Queen Elizabeth Avenue, Station Road, Burgess Hill Station and Keymer Road corridor.

The scheme will enhance pedestrian and cycle access through this key transport corridor. and will provide:

  • Widened pedestrian refuge points at the London Road junction to improve crossing provision for pedestrians and cyclists;
  • A widened northern footway on Queen Elizabeth Avenue to provide a shared use pedestrian / cycle route providing continuity with routes proposed on London Road and links west to the Victoria Business Park and beyond;
  • Raised table pedestrian and cycle crossings at key side road junctions including School Close and The Brow to provide safer crossings;
  • Improvements to the Queen Elizabeth Way / Civic Way / Station Road roundabout to provide pedestrian / cycle priority while retaining highway capacity;
  • Widened footway on the south side of Station Road providing improved pedestrian and cycle links to the town centre and Burgess Hill Station
  • Parking and surface water drainage improvements in Queens Crescent.

Further details on the scheme, including drawings and regular updates on delivery can be found on the West Sussex County Council dedicated website.

The Western Gateway scheme was subject to public engagement May – June 2020. Details can be found here.
