What is a Travel Plan

A Travel Plan is a set of ideas, information and incentives to help you make more sustainable travel choices.
We know that everyone has busy lives and sometimes this means that the car the only practical method of transport. However, research by Oxford University has shown that even if you swapped the car for just one bike ride a day, you could reduce your carbon footprint by 0.5 tonnes over a year. That’s about the same amount of carbon as driving 1,150 miles in an average petrol car.

We have put together this Travel Information for Brookleigh so that whether you’re a new resident, visiting a friend or coming to work you will have the information available to make informed choices about the way you travel.

Green Links – your guide to walking, cycling and horseriding at Brookleigh

A network of strategic green links is proposed in Brookleigh. The Green Circle and Green Superhighway are the main routes connecting commercial centres, parks and transport links with a series of Green Spokes extending out into the surrounding open spaces.

The strategic green links connect directly into the extensive network of footpaths, byways and bridleways beyond Brookleigh. The network is helping to create a circular route around Burgess Hill and provides access from Burgess Hill to Brookleigh and out into the countryside.

Green Circle

The Burgess Hill Green Circle is a ring of green spaces around and within the town, connected to one another and protected from development.

It provides a continuous habitat for wildlife and forms part of the walking, cycling and bridleway network through Brookleigh. It is both a recreational and commuter route to connect facilities and amenities on the site with key destinations off-site such as the train stations and town centre.

The Green Circle is a traffic-free route and is perfect for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

Green Superhighway

The Green Superhighway is a dedicated walking and cycling east-west route through the centre of the community.

The route is the main sustainable movement corridor with footways and cycleways connecting green spaces, community facilities, neighbourhoods and the employment area in the west.

A bridleway is provided on the western part of the Green Superhighway creating a loop to the Green Superhighway.

Green Spokes

A series of secondary routes, Green Spokes, extend out from the Green Circle and Green Superhighway into the surrounding residential areas.

The routes provide safe, car-free and scenic corridors for pedestrians and cyclists.

Bus

Burgess Hill has an extensive bus network covering the town itself as well as the wider area. A number of bus stops are located within a walking distance of Brookleigh, located on Maple Drive and Jane Murray Way.

Greener Car Travel

Car clubs are operating across West Sussex, including provision to be made available within Brookleigh. Car sharing is encouraged to discourage driving on your own.

Eco Driving Tips

1. Service your car regularly to maintain engine efficiency

2. Check your tyre pressures regularly (and before long journeys), under-inflated tyres use more fuel as they increase rolling resistance

3. Lose any unnecessary baggage, extra weight means extra fuel

4. Combine short trips; cold starts use more fuel so it pays to combine errands

5. Drive smoothly, accelerate gently and read the road ahead to avoid unnecessary braking

6. Cut down on the air-con; air-conditioning increases fuel consumption at low speeds (the effects are less noticeable at higher speeds)

7. The faster you go the greater the fuel consumption - cruising at 70mph uses up to 9% more fuel than at 60mph and up to 15% more fuel than at 50mph

Car Sharing

Car sharing is a great way to save money on travel and meet new people. Sign up for free at the following links below to find other Brookleigh residents making car use more sustainable and economical.
